It’s never really been true that the buying public wants something for nothing. Where services and products are concerned, what we all want is to pay the right price – a price that assures us that we are getting quality goods without paying over the odds. In other words: we want to pay enough to know that we’re not getting cheap tat, but we don’t want to be ripped off. It’s a principle that applies with particularly severity to web design and web development: two things, hand in hand, that are absolutely necessary for profitable e commerce.
The problem is, we don’t know anything about designing and developing websites. If we did, we’d do it ourselves. So we go to others who can do it, in the hope that they will build something that makes money for us. Because websites make money for us, the business owners, and because we don’t know how they are made, we become instinctively nervous. Are we paying too much? Could we get this cheaper?
Maybe. But then web design and web development is a pretty complex process. Doing it right, which is the same thing as doing it well, takes time, effort and dedication. These are all things that ought to add pounds to a price tag. The question, then, is not “can I get it cheaper?”, but “is this too cheap?”
As business people, we all know that price reflects input. The amount of work that goes into something is factored into the price it costs to buy. So a cheap website, one that is delivered for a one-off package payment, which sounds incredibly low, is simply not worth the money. That kind of web design and web development must have missed out some stages, otherwise it simply couldn’t cost as little as it does. Watch what you spend – the price of your site could be too low.
